New York Colony
Lots of colonists lived in New Amsterdam lots of them were not treated with respect. When the English took over New Amsterdam, none of colonists wanted to live in New Amsterdam.They got the name from the Duke of York. They named it liked that because Peter Minuit was Duke. Peter Minuit named New York Colony Duke of york. In 1626 the colony's first governor was Peter Minuit. He brought Manhattan also known as New Amsterdam. He brought Manhattan Island from the Indians in 1626. He got recalled the Dutch West company in 1631 for giving to many pravileges to the patroons. People use to use wampums. The wampum was made out of seashells. The Lenape use wampum in ceremonies, as gifts, and they also use it for money.During the 1700's colonists made wampum for themselves for use in the fur trade with Great Plains and North West Indians. Some colonists worked as indentured servants. These people did not have enough money to come to the colonies. They agreed to work for someone who could pay for there trip. After four to seven years they were free to work for themselves. There were very few free schools in town. The children who could afford to attend had six days a week. There was only one teacher and they all had to be in one room. The people started working at 6:00 am. They had a break at noon. At 6:00 pm they go home and eat. At 8:00 pm they go to sleep. They worked at a factory. They got payed $2 each week. Longhouses were built of timber and sod. With sloping roofs. The wigwams got destroyed when it was bad weather. The wigwams were just made out of hides and reeds. The colonists fighted for slavery and their country. They did not want the british to have New Amsterdam. Apperently they were not prepare but new york colony won. New york got special from it's skylines, cultural life of meuseums,concert halls, Broadway theaters and galleries. It was so special because it had so many places that new york colony did not have. City homes did not have room for garden. They couldn't raise animals for meat. Trains and carts brought food from farms to market in the city. The only thing they bought to the city was seeds. They traveled by canoes and halfmoon ships. Some went walking and others went on camels. Some people even went on canoes made out of leaves. Back then they did not have cars they had horses. They do not have houses like today. They had wigwams and longhouses. They don't have beds like we do today. They had to sleep in animal fur. They had to go far to go get water. They did not have sinks or filters like we have today. Settlers sailed on boats on the rivers to carry goods from the market. It took milesfrom their houses to the river because their houses were in dry places. The river was close to log houses.
